Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Nigerian films, particularly those within the Nollywood industry, often blend entertainment with social and historical narratives. Historical films, which depict past events, national heroes, and significant periods in Nigerian history, serve as powerful tools for educating young audiences about their heritage. In Lafia Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, secondary school students are a key demographic for the consumption of such films, as they are at an age where their understanding of national history is being formed. These films provide students with a visual understanding of their cultural and historical backgrounds, offering insights into critical events such as the Nigerian Civil War, colonialism, and post-independence struggles. The portrayal of historical events in Nigerian films has the potential to shape students' perceptions of national identity, their understanding of historical events, and their perspectives on contemporary issues (Musa & Ibrahim, 2023). However, there has been limited research on how secondary school students in Nasarawa engage with these historical narratives and how these films influence their knowledge of history and their attitudes towards national issues. This study aims to examine how historical narratives in Nigerian films influence the understanding of history among secondary school students in Lafia Local Government Area.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While Nigerian historical films are gaining popularity, their educational impact on secondary school students remains inadequately explored. The challenge lies in understanding whether students accurately interpret the historical events depicted in these films and how these narratives influence their perceptions of Nigerian history and identity. Although films offer a form of learning that may be more engaging for students compared to traditional textbooks, there are concerns about the accuracy and representation of historical facts. Some historical films may take creative liberties, resulting in distorted portrayals of events, which could misinform young viewers. Furthermore, secondary school students may struggle to critically analyze these films or differentiate between fact and fiction. The study seeks to address this gap by analyzing how historical narratives in Nigerian films shape students' historical understanding, whether these films foster national pride, and how students perceive the accuracy of the history presented in these films.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant in its contribution to the growing body of literature on the role of films in education, particularly within the context of Nigerian history and national identity. The findings will provide insights into how Nigerian films can be utilized as educational tools for secondary school students, promoting a deeper understanding of national history and cultural heritage. The study will also highlight the importance of accuracy in historical films and the potential for filmmakers to influence the perceptions of young people. The research will be valuable for educators, filmmakers, and policymakers interested in leveraging media to enhance historical education in schools, especially in the context of post-colonial African nations.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on secondary school students in Lafia Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, and will assess their engagement with Nigerian historical films. The scope will be limited to films that depict historical events related to Nigeria. A limitation of the study could be the subjective nature of students' interpretations of films, which may vary based on individual experiences and backgrounds.
